A Smart YouTube SEO Strategy for Businesses

YouTube LogoYouTube might seem like a new media that isn’t always relevant business models but used correctly it can help your business’s SEO and lead to first page search results.

All search engines, whether they be Google, Bing, or Yahoo incorporate a variety of different search results into their pages. For example, when you search “dog” on Google, you are provided with website links, photos, videos, and news results. Google holds over 60% of the search engine market share and the video results on a Google search are taken off of YouTube (which Google owns). YouTube is the largest video sharing community in the world with up to eight years of footage being uploaded daily and over 3 billion videos being viewed daily. Some of those 3 billion views can be yours as long as you tag you videos properly.

Having a YouTube channel can allow you to get hands on with your customers, showcase your expertise, and highlight new products. Videos of products also offer richer information than a stagnant image on a website. In the end your goal is to rise up the SEO rankings and ultimately drive traffic to your home page.

For example, say you have a new product coming out. You could create a video and write a blog post around the video explaining the benefits and features of this new product. You tag both the blog post and the video properly so that Google indexes the page and video appropriately. This works especially well for businesses in niche markets where having videos might seem unnecessary. By creating video you can land yourself on the front page of the search results and really stand out from your competitors for being genius and current enough to create a video.

Take our client Xtech for example. When you search “ATCA front panel” a YouTube video on their channel is incorporated in the first page of the Google search results in addition to their home site. Not all businesses in the same line of work as Xtech might think to create a video for this product, but this is what makes them stand out to those customers who find these front panels important and are looking for more information. For Xtech landing on the front page is a huge accomplishment brought about by SEO and proper tagging.

When creating YouTube videos keep in mind who your audience is. You’re not looking to create the next cute dog viral video sweeping the internet, you are looking to engage both current and potential clients.

When venturing into YouTube there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Choose an appropriate user name that clearly identifies your business. Try to get as close to the actual name of your business as possible to avoid confusion.
  • Upload a user picture, preferably your company’s logo.
  • Make sure to include your company’s website in your profile information.
  • Choose a color scheme that isn’t overwhelming. Generally videos look better against a black or white background as it allows viewers to focus on the footage.

Lastly, make use of the metric tools YouTube provides you about who is watching your videos. In the lower right hand corner next to the number of views a video has there is a graph. Click it, and YouTube will provide you with valuable insights about who your audience is and where traffic is coming from. A good example is the popular Shark Week 2011 promo video. YouTube videos are just one of the many ways in which you can rise up the SEO rankings and drive traffic to your business’s homepage. Use it wisely and start to distinguish yourself among your competitors. Happy YouTubing!

About.me: Gorgeous Personal Landing Pages

About.meToday I just wanted to draw your attention to a recent trend: personal landing pages. These are websites that pull your personal social media links together all on one page, making it easy for others to find you across a range of social media sites.

A personal favorite is About.me. The site is very popular among creatives and designers because it offers a more eye catching way to display yourself than say a LinkedIn page. About.me is extremely simple to use and if you put enough thought into it you can create a gorgeous personal landing page while building upon your SEO.

About.me profiles

The set up is extremely easy. Simply pick an image for your profile’s background. The higher the resolution the better as the image will fill the page’s entire background. Enter  your name, a headline, and a paragraph about yourself under the “Biography” tab. Lastly, link in your different social media profiles under the “Services” tab. About.me has a good list of the most commonly used social networks. You can also “Add a URL”, say to your personal site, and a link will be generated below your social media profile links.

How to Manage Multiple Social Networks Part II

Today we’re going to talk about managing multiple social networks through one tool or service.

ping.fmIn our previous entry we briefly explained the benefits of using social networking platforms, such as Ping.fm and Hellotxt, to update multiple social networks simultaneously. In this second follow up post we are going to further examine the pros and cons of using these social networking platforms.

First let’s talk about the pros. The main benefit (and entire purpose) of these platforms is updating multiple profiles with the click of a button. The end goal is to save time because you do not have to sign in and out of the various sites your business maintains profiles on. The time saved here should be used to do other things that help your business grow, such as engaging your customers online and building brand recognition.

Another pro about these platforms is that they are excellent for “breaking news” items that you want to quickly draw the attention of all of your customer base to. It might be good to then reinforce these news items with individual social network updates that can go further in depth. Use these platforms to spread important news that can be seen as relevant to all users across all your profiles.

Now let’s talk about the cons. You must learn when it is and is not appropriate to use these platforms to update your profiles. A huge pitfall to these platforms is that users substitute individual site updates with these large blasts. With all social networks you have to tailor the information to suit the medium and make that information relevant to the users of that site.

Also, not all information or news is relevant to all of your customers on all of your profiles. It is perfectly fine to exclude some markets and messages from these blasts. Use the blasts strategically to maximize the amount of people viewing content. Determining what information is relevant to all users across a range of profiles can be tricky so use your best judgment.

Below are listed some in depth guides for some of the platforms listed in our previous post that you can use in addition to our tips. Happy posting!

How to Manage Multiple Social Networks Part I

Today we’re going to talk about managing multiple social networks through one tool or service.

ping.fmWhen you have multiple social media profiles it can be frustrating updating them all with a recent news item or post. Fortunately, there are several solutions that allow users to update multiple social media profiles simultaneously. These social networking platforms can save you valuable time and aggravation.

There are a variety of different services that allow users and business to simultaneously update multiple social media profiles. We here at Web Strategic Marketing are rather fond of Ping.fm, one of the original trailblazers in this unique area. Below we have included a list of links to similar services so you can scope out and choose the platform that best fits your business model.

When choosing a platform there are a few key points to keep in mind:

First, you want to take a look at all the available profiles supported by the platform and make sure the sites you use are included. The idea is to save time and quickly blast information, so if you have to go back and update profiles individually after using a tool you are wasting your time. Some of these platforms support over 200 different social networks so there is a tool out there that is right for you.

Secondly, it is important to run metrics on your posts. Make sure you shorten your links with Hootsuite or bit.ly to track clicks. Often times these tools will shorten links automatically for you but you will not be able to gather information on who is clicking. Shortening the links ahead of time will generate valuable information about your audience and the links will remain unchanged when being posted to your profile.

In our next post we are going to weigh the pros and cons of using these platforms to simultaneously update multiple social media profiles. We will also discuss some common pitfalls and mistakes to avoid when using these platforms.
